The last scene in the previous episode was when Original Daddy Mikael told Stefan he must lure Klaus back into town. In order to do so, Stefan, Damon, Elena and Mikael come up with a plan
that they'll stab Mikael, tell Klaus they've killed his father, and when Klaus presses Stefan for the truth, it's exactly what he'll be able to give him. As soon as Stefan hangs up the phone, Elena pulls the dagger out of Mikael and he eventually comes to as Rebekah sits there waiting for her tense father/daughter reunion.
